Come on, it’s happened to all of us.
Even with all the different things we can do, there are just some days when nothing appeals to us.
How many streaming services are there now? How many social media platforms? How many games are sitting on our phones? We can watch just about anything we want, whenever we want. We can scroll through Facebook, X, or whatever other platform we happen to use. We can play a game, listen to music, or grab our Kindle and start reading.
And sometimes that book just isn’t cutting it
So we put it down and start looking for something else.
But let’s forget about the gadgets for a minute.
It’s a nice day. Go for a walk. Go fishing. Ride a bike. Sit outside. Visit a friend. There are more activities available to us than most generations in history could have imagined.
Society has given us an incredible number of choices when it comes to entertaining ourselves or simply staying active.
And yet, sometimes, none of it sounds appealing.
That happens to all of us. You sit there thinking, “What the heck am I supposed to do?”
I’ve had plenty of those days myself. Sometimes I’ll decide that maybe I just need to get out of the house. So I’ll go to the local pub, have a beer, talk to people, and see if that changes my mood.
And sometimes even that doesn’t work.
There I am, sitting in a place I normally enjoy, with a beer in front of me and people around me, and I’m still thinking, “Eh.”
Nothing is wrong. I’m not necessarily having a bad day. I just don’t feel like doing anything.
Part of it, I think, is that we live in such a fast-paced world. Maybe we just get tired of all the shit.
Maybe we need some downtime from it all, but we still want something to do.
It could also be that we’ve done all of those things so many times that we’ve reached the point of, “Been there, done that. Not today.”
Or maybe we’re simply fried from a hard day or a hard week. We’re so mentally tired that we can’t even wrap our minds around doing any of it.
I can honestly say that even though I’m retired, I get tired of the shit too.
Sometimes I just take the day off. I sleep in, get up, and mosey around the homestead.
And yeah, I’m still bored.
But I’m not pushing myself to find something to do just for the sake of doing something.
And you know what? I think that’s a good thing.
Maybe sometimes we need that downtime. Maybe our minds need a chance to recharge, even if we don’t realize that’s what we’re doing.
I know I do.
Or, there can be a much simpler reason for us being bored.
We’re broke.
We can’t do what we actually want to do, and the options that are left just suck as far as we’re concerned.
I’ve been there too.
Sometimes you don’t want to watch another movie, play another game, take another walk, or sit around the house. You want to go somewhere, do something, or spend a little money and have some fun.
But you can’t.
So you sit there thinking, “Well, I could do this. Or I could do that.”
And none of it sounds worth doing.
Sometimes boredom isn’t complicated at all. Sometimes we just can’t afford to do what we actually want to do.
And that’s where I am today.
I know I should probably be writing an article about something technical. Naaa.
Google Analytics just fried my brain and pissed me off again. So screw it. My article today is about not wanting to do jack shit.
And what I actually want to do, I just don’t have the money for right now because I’m moving into a new place.
Priorities.
So if you reach that point where you’re bored and nothing sounds appealing, maybe just take a nap. Watch something on television that requires absolutely no concentration.
For me, that’s Scooby-Doo.
I don’t have to watch every minute of it because, well, I’ve been there. I’ve done that. I can let it catch my attention when it does while I daydream or do whatever else I feel like doing.
Maybe that’s not wasting the day.
Maybe sometimes that’s exactly what we need.
