Isn\u2019t antimatter also what powers the warp drive on the Starship Enterprise?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So here we go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another Danny mind warp, this time into the strange territory where real science, dangerous particles, and science fiction all collide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In case you are unfamiliar with it, antimatter is not something invented for science fiction. Scientists have known about it for nearly a century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Antimatter is the counterpart to ordinary matter. An antimatter particle has the same mass as its matching matter particle, but certain properties, including its electric charge, are reversed. For example, the electron has a negative charge, while its antimatter counterpart, the positron, has a positive charge. A proton is positively charged, while an antiproton carries a negative charge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The existence of antimatter was first predicted by physicist Paul Dirac in 1928. It was experimentally confirmed in 1932 when Carl Anderson discovered the positron while studying cosmic rays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For a deeper explanation, take a look at the article <a href=\"https:\/\/cms.cern\/physics\/what-and-where-antimatter\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/cms.cern\/physics\/what-and-where-antimatter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">What and where is Antimatter?<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Okay, now you know what antimatter is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As previously stated, antimatter is the opposite of matter. And just like most total opposites, when the two come together, the result can be very volatile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Like a big-ass explosion.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thus, the reference to <em>Angels &amp; Demons<\/em>, where someone tries to use antimatter to blow Vatican City off the map.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By the way, the book was better than the movie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And I actually thought the movie was pretty good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whether it is humans in a confrontation or antimatter coming into contact with matter, total opposites do not always end well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You may wonder why we would ever want to use it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But think about what happened when we harnessed nuclear reactions. We used that power to create devastating bombs, but we also learned how to use the energy for peaceful purposes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nuclear energy has been used to generate electricity, propel various vehicles, and power a few spacecraft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Humanity has a habit of discovering something incredibly dangerous and then asking whether we can also make it useful.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And just like nuclear reactions, which were extremely expensive and difficult to create and control in the beginning, we are still in the very early stages of learning how to produce, contain, and use antimatter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But unlike nuclear energy, antimatter has never received the massive financial backing and urgency created by a world war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nuclear research was fast-tracked through secret programs in several countries, with the United States eventually harnessing it through the Manhattan Project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Antimatter has never had that kind of push.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In fact, if particle accelerators had not already been built for other forms of research, I am not sure we would have ever created antimatter here on Earth at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And even with those machines, we have only produced incredibly small amounts at an incredible cost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Scientists have estimated that producing just one gram of antimatter could cost tens of trillions of dollars. One widely quoted estimate places the cost at around $62.5 trillion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Why so expensive?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Particle accelerators use enormous amounts of energy to produce ridiculously tiny quantities of antimatter. Then scientists have to slow it down, capture it, and keep it suspended inside magnetic fields so it never touches ordinary matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because the moment it does, both the matter and antimatter annihilate each other and release an enormous amount of energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So producing antimatter is insanely expensive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Keeping it around is an entirely different engineering nightmare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Blah, blah, blah. Yada, yada, yada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is expensive as hell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But expensive shit has never stopped us before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The real question is: Why would we even bother with antimatter when we already have nuclear energy?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the purpose of this post, the answer to why we would bother is simple:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSpace: the final frontier.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The mission of the USS Enterprise was to explore strange new worlds, seek out new life and new civilizations, and boldly go where humanity had never gone before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Look, space exploration, just like AI and other modern technology, seems to have made enormous leaps over the last ten years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We started in the 1960s, made it to the Moon, began exploring space more regularly, and eventually created permanent outposts orbiting Earth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now we are talking about returning to the Moon, traveling to Mars, and exploring even farther into the solar system. We launch satellites and probes almost daily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But what is still holding us back?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our current methods of space propulsion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now, if you follow the news, you know that we are launching more space vehicles than ever before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And because we are doing it more often, we are getting better at it. Just like anything else that is produced more frequently, the costs are beginning to come down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So I know what you are thinking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Why would we pursue an even more expensive method of propulsion?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wait for it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I already gave you a hint near the very beginning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Currently, we are trying to create antimatter ourselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But why create something that is already out there?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As I stated near the beginning, antimatter is a natural part of the universe and can be found in space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I have also covered how launching vehicles into space has become almost routine compared with only a few decades ago, along with the enormous advances we have already made in space exploration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So perhaps the real question is not whether we can create antimatter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps it is whether we can harvest what is already there.It is only a matter of time before manufacturing in space becomes more common, especially with the continued advancement of AI and robotics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So why not start doing the analysis and engineering now?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Why not explore whether we can harvest, process, and use antimatter in space?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We can continue using nuclear energy for our Earth-bound needs, while learning how to use resources harvested from space for our space-bound needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead of hauling every drop of fuel away from Earth, perhaps the future of space travel depends on learning how to gather what we need after we get there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now, one of the biggest problems with space travel is the enormous distance that needs to be covered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And if you listen to most scientists, they will tell you that traveling faster than the speed of light is impossible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I can argue that point, and often have, but I am going to stay on topic here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So yes, the reference to the Starship Enterprise was mostly clickbait.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I freely admit that I use it too sometimes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At least I did it while laughing about it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What I am saying is this: If we can move beyond today\u2019s slower propulsion methods, and avoid designing spacecraft with so much of their size and weight dedicated to fuel, we could travel farther in less time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That could make more manned missions to the farther reaches of space possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And they told me I would be bored when I retired.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I can tell you that my mind is always moving, usually in several different directions at once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today\u2019s post pretty much proves that point.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>During an attempt to power down my brain, I started watching Angels &amp; Demons to relax.
