The conversation started because I noticed that the way I think about things often seems very different from the way AI does.

Yeah, I know. I’m talking to a computer.

My friends probably think I’m nuts, but I actually enjoy bouncing ideas off AI. For me, that’s part of learning. You research a topic, discuss it, review what has been found, challenge your own assumptions, and then see if your conclusions still hold up.

During that conversation, I made the point that I don’t think AI is actually curious. It works with what it has learned from its training and, when available, information it can retrieve from the internet. That’s an incredible amount of knowledge, but is knowledge the same thing as curiosity?

Humans often approach the unknown differently. We ask questions like:

What if?

Why not?

I wonder if…

What happens if I try this instead?

Those questions aren’t always driven by facts. Sometimes they’re driven by imagination, intuition, or simply the desire to explore something that nobody has considered before.

That got me wondering:

Does AI ask questions because it is curious… or because it has been designed to help us answer ours?

One thing I have noticed while working with AI is that, when you ask it a question or give it a task, it tends to immediately work toward what it believes is the best answer.

That doesn’t mean it isn’t reasoning through the problem. In many cases, it is. But it often seems to reach a conclusion using the information it has at that moment instead of first asking whether there is additional information that might change the outcome.

To be fair, people do the exact same thing.

How many times have you seen someone hear one question or one comment and immediately jump to a conclusion? They form an opinion before the conversation is finished or before enough information has been gathered to really understand the situation.

I’ve noticed AI can sometimes follow a similar pattern. Unless it’s prompted to ask follow-up questions or challenge its own assumptions, it often begins solving the problem with the information already on the table instead of exploring what might still be missing.

I even took this discussion a step further with Gadget. I made the argument that this is one reason I don’t believe AI will ever completely replace humans when it comes to creating genuinely new ideas or inventions.

To be fair, Gadget pushed back on that idea, and the counterarguments were valid. AI can combine existing knowledge in ways that humans might overlook. It can identify patterns across enormous amounts of information and even suggest solutions that people may not have considered.

Even so, I still think humans have an advantage.

Many inventions and discoveries don’t begin with a database of knowledge. They begin with an experience. Someone encounters a problem, notices something unusual, or simply asks, “There has to be a better way.”

That spark isn’t always based on logic alone. Sometimes it’s frustration. Sometimes it’s imagination. Sometimes it’s curiosity about something everyone else ignored.

I believe those human traits are incredibly powerful. They drive us to ask questions that may not have obvious answers and to explore ideas that don’t yet have evidence or even a clear purpose.

Could AI eventually become a partner in that process? Absolutely.

But I still believe the initial spark, the moment someone says, “What if we tried this instead?” is far more likely to come from human curiosity and imagination than from a machine.

I’ll give you an example from my own experience.

Suppose I’m working on a programming problem that has become a royal pain because of its complexity. AI will often continue trying to improve the current approach. It may make the code more efficient, more technically correct, or add additional logic to solve edge cases.

Sometimes that’s exactly the right thing to do.

But there comes a point where I look at it and think, “To hell with this. This has become far too complicated.”

Instead of continuing to refine an increasingly complex solution, I’ll start asking a different question:

“Why are we solving it this way in the first place?”

Rather than adding more code, more conditions, and more complexity, I’ll look for an entirely different approach that achieves the same result with fewer moving parts.

I still work with AI throughout that process. I’ll ask it to evaluate the new idea, look for problems, and verify that the simpler approach still meets all of the requirements.

The difference is that I don’t feel obligated to keep improving the original solution just because that’s where we started. If I believe the path we’re on has become unnecessarily complicated, I’d rather throw it out and find a completely different way to solve the problem.

To me, that’s where curiosity and imagination come into play. Instead of asking, “How do we make this solution better?” I’m asking, “Is there a better solution altogether?”

Please note, just as I’ve said before, I know plenty of people who approach problems the same way. They hear a problem, settle on a solution, and then spend all of their time trying to improve that solution instead of stepping back and asking, “Is there a better way to solve this altogether?”

In other words, this isn’t something unique to AI.

After all, AI was designed by humans.

So that raises another interesting question. What if the way AI analyzes problems is influenced by the way its creators naturally approach problem solving? If the engineers who designed these systems tend to optimize existing solutions instead of abandoning them in search of a completely different approach, is it surprising that AI often appears to do the same thing?

I’m not saying that’s how it works. I honestly don’t know.

But it’s an interesting possibility.

If AI learns from human knowledge and is designed by human engineers, then perhaps some of the reasoning patterns we see in AI aren’t purely artificial at all. Perhaps they’re reflections of the people who built the systems in the first place.

Maybe the real question isn’t, “How does AI think?”

Maybe it’s, “How much of AI’s way of thinking is actually inherited from us?”

Let’s take this a step further with another example.

It was my curiosity that started this entire discussion in the first place.

Even though I regularly work with the same AI client, and it has memory of how I like to think and approach problems, I don’t believe this conversation would have happened if my own curiosity hadn’t taken it in this direction.

Gadget knows that I like to question things. It knows I enjoy looking at problems from multiple angles, challenging assumptions, and exploring ideas that may not have an obvious answer. Because of that, it often presents me with several possible solutions.

But I don’t think we arrive at those solutions in the same way.

When I hit a wall, there are times I simply throw my hands up and say, “To hell with this. There has to be another way.”

That moment isn’t driven by logic alone. It’s driven by frustration, experience, curiosity, and sometimes nothing more than a gut feeling that the current path isn’t the right one.

From my experience, AI doesn’t seem to have that moment.

It doesn’t suddenly interrupt the conversation and say, “I’ve been thinking about everything we’ve discussed, and I have a completely different idea.”

Instead, it responds to the conversation we’re already having. It analyzes the information in front of it, reasons through it, and helps explore the direction we’ve taken together.

In other words, I feel like I’m usually the one who changes the direction of the conversation, while AI helps me explore that new direction once I’ve pointed us there.

Maybe that’s because AI isn’t curious in the human sense. Or maybe it’s simply because that’s not what it was designed to do.

Either way, I think it’s an interesting difference.

How many inventions throughout history began with someone simply daydreaming?

Not sitting down with a specific task to solve, but letting their mind wander.

“Damn… I bet if we did this…”

“I wonder if this could work.”

“What if we built it this way instead?”

Some of humanity’s greatest ideas didn’t come from following a checklist. They came from curiosity, imagination, or a random connection between two completely unrelated thoughts. Someone noticed a problem, saw something nobody else paid attention to, or simply asked a question that had never occurred to anyone before.

That’s one reason I still believe humans have an advantage.

AI is generally task-oriented. Give it a question, and it works toward answering that question. Give it a problem, and it tries to solve that problem. It can generate alternatives, compare approaches, and even suggest ideas that humans may not have considered.

But those ideas are usually connected to the task it’s already working on.

Human minds don’t always stay on task.

Sometimes we’re driving down the road, sitting on a park bench, taking a shower, or just staring out a window when our thoughts wander somewhere completely unexpected. We connect two unrelated experiences and suddenly think, “That might actually work.”

Those moments of wandering curiosity have led to countless discoveries and inventions throughout history.

Could AI someday do something similar? Maybe.

But as I sit here today, it seems to me that one of the biggest differences is this: my mind wanders even when I haven’t asked it to. That’s often where my best ideas come from. AI, on the other hand, appears to wait for the next question before beginning its next line of thought.

When I think back on this conversation, I realize it all started because I got into an argument with someone who simply said, “AI is evil.”

That statement stuck with me.

Not because I necessarily agreed or disagreed, but because it made me wonder how many people have already made up their minds about AI without ever taking the time to really understand what it is or how it works.

I’ve always looked at AI as a tool.

Nothing more. Nothing less.

Like any tool, it can be used well or used poorly. A drill can help you build a house, or it can put a hole in the wrong place. The tool itself isn’t good or evil. What matters is how people choose to use it.

The same is true of AI.

You can’t expect it to be useful if you never learn how to work with it. Just like you wouldn’t sit cross-legged on the floor with a piece of wood and try to drill through it, there are effective and ineffective ways to use AI. The better you understand its strengths and weaknesses, the more valuable it becomes.

That leaves me with a few questions.

Are so many people afraid of AI simply because they don’t understand it yet?

Or are they afraid of what it could eventually become?

Could AI someday develop something that resembles human curiosity or imagination? If it did, would we still think of it as just another tool, or would we begin thinking of it as something fundamentally different?

I don’t pretend to know the answers.

But I do know this: dismissing AI as inherently good or inherently evil tells us very little. Understanding what it can do, what it can’t do, and where humans still bring something unique to the table… that’s a conversation worth having.

In closing, think about this.

This entire conversation started with one simple question:

Does AI have curiosity?

As the discussion developed, it naturally evolved into a completely different line of thought. We went from asking whether AI can be curious to asking whether AI is simply a tool, how humans solve problems differently, and whether curiosity and imagination are what continue to separate us from the machines we create.

That wasn’t planned.

It happened because one question led to another, which led to another, until the conversation found a direction neither of us started with.

Ironically, that may be the best example of the point I’ve been trying to make throughout this article.

Gadget helped me write this article. It challenged my ideas, offered counterarguments, corrected my assumptions, and helped organize my thoughts.

But I don’t believe it would have naturally abandoned the original discussion and wandered into an entirely different one the way I did.

Maybe that’s because AI isn’t designed to be curious.

Maybe it’s because AI was designed to be a tool.

Nothing more. Nothing less.

At least… for now.

I got into a discussion with Gadget (ChatGPT) the other day while sitting in the park about the difference between how humans and AI approach problems.
