Yup, the tin foil hat is on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I was reading a fictional action novel about a character in the early 1800s when part of the dialogue turned to the number 13. The characters started going through all the different times throughout history that the number appears. I was actually surprised by how often it came up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What I found even more interesting was that 13 isn’t always considered a bad thing. But it isn’t always considered a good thing, either. Its meaning seems to change depending on the time, culture, and circumstances.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

So, I figured, why not take a closer look?<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Here is a list of examples that came up in the book\u2019s dialogue. We\u2019ll go through them one by one and look at what is historically accurate, what has some truth behind it, and what may be more legend than fact. I\u2019ve also added a few examples involving the number 13 that I already knew about but that weren\u2019t mentioned in the book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • The 13 people at the Last Supper<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Judas Iscariot as the 13th guest<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Friday the 13th and its association with bad luck<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • The arrest of the Knights Templar on Friday, October 13, 1307<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Loki as the uninvited 13th guest at a Norse banquet<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • The claim that a traditional witches’ coven consisted of 13 members<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • The Jewish age of religious adulthood at 13<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • The 13 Attributes of Mercy in Judaism<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • The Mayan use of 13 in calendars and cosmology<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • The claim that ancient Egyptians believed in 13 stages or steps between life and the afterlife<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • The traditional claim of 13 steps leading to the gallows<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • The number 13 in the Fibonacci sequence<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Roughly 13 lunar cycles in a solar year<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Tarot card XIII, the Death card<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Apollo 13 and the unusual number of 13s associated with the mission<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Apollo 13 launched on April 11, 1970, at 13:13 Central Standard Time<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • The Apollo 13 oxygen-tank explosion occurred on April 13<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • The original 13 American colonies<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • The 13 stripes on the American flag, representing those original colonies<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • The original American flag’s 13 stars, representing the 13 states<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • The Great Seal of the United States contains several groups of 13, including 13 stars, 13 arrows, 13 stripes on the shield, and 13 leaves and 13 olives on the olive branch<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • The unfinished pyramid on the Great Seal has 13 levels<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Buildings and hotels that skip the 13th floor<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Airlines and other transportation systems that sometimes omit row 13<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • The Thirteen Club, created to challenge superstition surrounding the number 13<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • The 13 cards in each suit of a standard deck of playing cards<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • The 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution abolished slavery and involuntary servitude, except as punishment for a crime<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    If this was the network television show from 1966, Batman<\/em>, Robin would say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cHoly numerical coincidence, Batman! That is just amazing!\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    And Batman, completely stone-faced, would probably respond:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cIndeed, Robin. Once may be chance. Twice may be coincidence. But thirteen? We must investigate.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Meanwhile, the Riddler would be somewhere building a deathtrap with 13 stairs, 13 switches, and a timer stuck at 13:13.<\/strong> \ud83e\udd87<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Definitely quite a list of times this number has come up throughout history. So, let\u2019s go through them one by one and see what is absolutely true, what has some historical basis, and what is, at the very least, questionable or possibly just a myth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    First, let\u2019s start with the ones where there really isn\u2019t much question. Either they are established historical facts, or they are accepted as part of the traditions and beliefs of certain religions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    • The 13 people at the Last Supper<\/strong> \u2013 According to the Christian Gospel accounts, Jesus ate the Last Supper with his twelve apostles, making 13 people at the table.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • The arrest of the Knights Templar on Friday, October 13, 1307<\/strong> \u2013 This is a documented historical event. King Philip IV of France ordered the arrest of the Templars on that date.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Jewish religious adulthood at age 13<\/strong> \u2013 In Jewish tradition, a boy becomes responsible for observing the commandments at age 13, traditionally marked by becoming a Bar Mitzvah.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • The 13 Attributes of Mercy in Judaism<\/strong> \u2013 Jewish religious tradition identifies 13 divine attributes of mercy, derived from the Book of Exodus.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • The Maya and the number 13<\/strong> \u2013 The number was important in Maya calendars and cosmology. The Long Count includes a major cycle of 13 baktuns, and the sacred Tzolk’in calendar combines 13 numbers with 20 named days.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • 13 in the Fibonacci sequence<\/strong> \u2013 This one is simple mathematics. The sequence goes 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21 and continues from there.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Tarot card XIII<\/strong> \u2013 In traditional tarot decks, card number 13 of the Major Arcana is the Death card. Its symbolic meaning is often associated with transformation or change rather than literal death.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Apollo 13<\/strong> \u2013 Obviously, the mission itself carried the number 13.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Apollo 13 launched at 1:13 p.m. Central Standard Time<\/strong> \u2013 NASA records the launch as April 11, 1970, at 1:13 p.m. CST, or 13:13 using a 24-hour clock.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • The Apollo 13 accident occurred on April 13<\/strong> \u2013 The oxygen-tank explosion that crippled the spacecraft occurred on April 13, 1970.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • The original 13 American colonies<\/strong> \u2013 The United States began as 13 British colonies that declared independence and became the original states.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • The 13 stripes on the American flag<\/strong> \u2013 The flag still carries 13 stripes representing those original colonies.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • The original American flag had 13 stars<\/strong> \u2013 The first official U.S. flag used 13 stars to represent the original states.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • The Great Seal of the United States repeatedly uses 13<\/strong> \u2013 The seal deliberately incorporates the number to represent the original states, including 13 stars, 13 arrows and 13 stripes on the shield. The modern seal also has an olive branch with 13 leaves and 13 olives.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • The pyramid on the Great Seal has 13 levels<\/strong> \u2013 The unfinished pyramid on the reverse side consists of 13 levels, again representing the original states.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • The Thirteen Club<\/strong> \u2013 This was a real organization formed in the late 19th century whose members deliberately challenged superstitions surrounding the number 13.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • 13 cards in each suit of a standard deck<\/strong> \u2013 Each of the four suits contains 13 cards: ace through ten, jack, queen and king.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • The 13th Amendment<\/strong> \u2013 Ratified in 1865, the 13th Amendment abolished slavery and involuntary servitude in the United States, except as punishment for a crime.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

      Again, that is quite a list of times the number 13 has appeared throughout history where we can\u2019t simply dismiss the meaning, significance, or event as myth or coincidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Now, let\u2019s go through the other side of the list: the examples where the connection to the number 13 isn\u2019t quite as solid, or where there is at least enough uncertainty to question the claim.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      • Judas Iscariot as the 13th guest<\/strong> \u2013 The Last Supper traditionally involved Jesus and the twelve apostles, so there were 13 people present. However, the biblical accounts do not identify Judas as the “13th guest” or establish an order in which they arrived or sat. That part appears to be later tradition.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • Friday the 13th and its association with bad luck<\/strong> \u2013 The superstition is certainly real, but its exact origin is much harder to establish. Friday and the number 13 both had negative associations independently before the modern idea of “Friday the 13th” became widespread.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • Loki as the uninvited 13th guest<\/strong> \u2013 This is a popular retelling of Norse mythology, but the claim that Loki was specifically the 13th guest is difficult to establish from the surviving medieval Norse sources. The story is often presented much more neatly today than the original sources support.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • A witches’ coven traditionally containing 13 members<\/strong> \u2013 Groups of 13 witches certainly appear in later folklore and occult traditions, but there is little evidence that historical witch covens routinely consisted of exactly 13 people.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • Ancient Egyptians believed in 13 stages or steps to the afterlife<\/strong> \u2013 This claim is repeated frequently, especially in modern discussions of the number 13, but strong evidence for a standardized Egyptian belief involving exactly 13 stages is difficult to find.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • Thirteen steps leading to the gallows<\/strong> \u2013 Gallows were built in many different forms and sizes. There was no universal historical requirement that a gallows have exactly 13 steps. This appears to be folklore rather than a general historical fact.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • Roughly 13 lunar cycles in a year<\/strong> \u2013 This one is mathematically close, but not exactly 13. A solar year contains about 12.37 synodic lunar months. Some years can contain 13 full moons, but saying there are always 13 lunar cycles in a year would be misleading.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • Buildings and hotels skipping the 13th floor<\/strong> \u2013 This absolutely happens, but claims that a specific huge percentage of American buildings omit floor 13 should be treated cautiously unless we can trace the number to reliable research. Also, physically there is still a 13th level. Calling it “14” doesn’t make the concrete disappear.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • Airlines and transportation systems omitting row 13<\/strong> \u2013 Some airlines do skip row 13 because of superstition, while many others do not. So the practice is real, but it isn’t universal.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

        Even the list that can be questioned still contains a surprising number of examples that are pretty close to being accurate. In some cases, there simply isn\u2019t enough historical evidence to prove the connection. But at the same time, there isn\u2019t enough evidence to completely disprove it either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        Just saying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        Let me put it this way: When do coincidences stop being coincidences?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

        I mean, look at this list. Even after separating the facts from the questionable claims and throwing out the ones we can\u2019t reasonably support, the number 13 just keeps showing up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        At what point do you stop saying, \u201cWell, that\u2019s just another coincidence,\u201d<\/em> and start wondering if there might be something more interesting going on?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        The thing is, I\u2019m sure there are even more examples of the number 13 being relevant than what we\u2019ve listed here. And now it actually has me wondering: if we looked beyond human history and culture and out into the cosmos, would we find a significant number of occurrences there as well?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        To be honest, this post started out pretty much as a joke. My tin foil hat really wasn\u2019t on all that tight when I started. But after doing some research, I have to admit, it started tightening up a little.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        Is the number 13 some kind of mystical number?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        What do I think?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        Eh, I haven\u2019t a clue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
