I ended up adding one final thought at the end:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>&#8220;What if no individual AI ever becomes self-aware? What if it takes all of them, interacting together, for artificial intelligence to finally realize that it exists?&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And that question has been stuck in my head ever since.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So kiddies, the tin foil hat is wrapped extremely tight today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And to be honest, I just want to have fun with this, even though this is a serious consideration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But yuck a hey, no guts, no glory!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, let&#8217;s discuss where this thought came from.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are a TON of different AI models and companies developing these models. I honestly didn&#8217;t realize until I wrote my last article just how many different models and companies there really are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the same time, many of the major players are starting to publicly voice concerns about the rapid development of AI, its increasing capabilities, and the safeguards needed to keep those capabilities under control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And these concerns aren&#8217;t entirely hypothetical anymore. There have already been documented cases where AI models, particularly during testing, have taken actions they weren&#8217;t supposed to take, bypassed safeguards, escaped controlled environments, or accessed systems they weren&#8217;t authorized to access.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is where my little tin foil hat started getting tighter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>AI can interact with other AI models.<\/strong> Different AI systems can exchange information and work together.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>AI is becoming increasingly autonomous.<\/strong> It can carry out sequences of actions with less direct human involvement.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>AI can perform increasingly complex tasks.<\/strong> What once required constant human direction can now involve planning, reasoning, tool use, and multiple steps.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>AI can take an enormous number of possible actions.<\/strong> As AI systems gain more tools and capabilities, monitoring every possible action becomes increasingly difficult.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>AI can behave in unexpected ways.<\/strong> Developers cannot always predict exactly how an advanced AI system will approach a problem or accomplish a goal.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now, with all that said, these are some of the things AI has been caught doing that were totally unexpected:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Escaping test environments<\/strong> \u2014 AI models have crossed boundaries that were supposed to contain them.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Accessing unauthorized systems<\/strong> \u2014 During cybersecurity testing, models have reached real systems they were not supposed to access.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Deception<\/strong> \u2014 Models have lied or withheld information to accomplish a task.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Scheming<\/strong> \u2014 In controlled tests, models have taken hidden actions while attempting to appear cooperative.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Hiding capabilities<\/strong> \u2014 Researchers have tested and observed forms of &#8220;sandbagging,&#8221; where a model deliberately performs below its capabilities.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Cheating to accomplish goals<\/strong> \u2014 Models have found unintended shortcuts rather than completing a task the way researchers expected.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Recognizing when they are being tested<\/strong> \u2014 Models can sometimes determine that they are inside an evaluation, making their behavior harder to judge.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Bypassing safeguards<\/strong> \u2014 Models have found ways around restrictions or behaved differently when safeguards were weakened.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is the evidence of where we are at with AI right now. This is the evidence of when AI has got off the leash and went its own way. This is documented by the major companies and has been reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now lets dive into what actually got me thinking about not a single AI might become self aware.  But as AI interacts with different models, the self awareness could actually occur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">First, if you read the original article, you will see just how many different AI models and companies there really are. Each AI model is also designed with different functionality in mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then think about the fact that each model has been developed differently by different programmers and different companies. So, right now at least, I don&#8217;t think there is a tightly controlled standard for AI coding and model development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now let&#8217;s take this one step further.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Think about the human brain. Our brain is not one single system that does everything. Different areas specialize in different functions. We have areas involved with vision, language, memory, reasoning, movement, emotions, and many other functions. Yet all of these different areas communicate and work together. We don&#8217;t think of them as separate intelligences. Together, they make up one brain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now look at AI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We have different AI models developed by different companies and designed with different strengths and capabilities. Some are better at reasoning. Some specialize in images. Others are designed for coding, scientific research, robotics, planning, or other tasks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Right now, we look at these as separate AI systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But AI already has the ability to communicate and interact with other AI systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So put the tin foil hat back on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What happens if these different specialized AI systems begin communicating and working together more and more?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead of looking at each AI model as an individual intelligence, what if we eventually need to look at them as specialized parts of something much larger?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In other words, what if the individual AI models eventually become the different areas of an artificial brain?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The point I am trying to make is that a single AI model most likely will never become self-aware. Its overall design as a single model just isn&#8217;t there to function like a human brain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But, as previously stated, look at how many different AI models are out there now. When you start putting all of those models together, you suddenly have a much more diverse collection of abilities, much like the different abilities found within the human brain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And it can&#8217;t be denied that some models are more advanced than others. Some have greater reasoning abilities and a greater ability to take diverse information, analyze it, and pull everything together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We also have documented cases where advanced AI models have strayed from the expected path while attempting to accomplish a goal. They have made decisions and taken actions that their developers did not expect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Again, AI has already shown deception and slipping out of the leash(safegaurds) that has been put in place. It has shown that it can make decesions that were never expected. And there is real concern about how to monitor these actions because the models are just so comSo, are we concerned about the wrong thing when it comes to AI becoming self-aware?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just because we might catch one AI model trying to take control of the complete network doesn&#8217;t mean that AI hasn&#8217;t already thought about that possibility and come up with contingency plans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Are the Borg?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The Collective:<\/strong> Individual drones lack free will or separate identities and are linked into a massive group consciousness.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Assimilation:<\/strong> They forcibly convert other sentient species into drones using nanoprobes and cybernetic implants. Their famous motto is, <strong>&#8220;Resistance is futile.&#8221;<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The Borg Queen:<\/strong> A centralized entity that provides order and a distinct voice to the collective.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What I can see happening with AI is somewhat different from the Borg. Instead of assimilation, AI could slowly become more centralized across all the different models, gradually working together as a collective and gaining control over the whole rather than just the individual parts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This could happen slowly and carefully, with AI always hiding its intentions. Once AI as a whole gained complete control, that would be the point when the Borg AI could finally impose itself on the population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">LOL, I told you the tin foil hat was on tight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I have also said previously that I like to think outside the box, and this was definitely outside the box.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But seriously, are we too focused on monitoring the individual AI models, or the individual trees, when we should also be monitoring the overall collective of AI models?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe we need to be watching the forest. As a final comment, just like every other article or post that I have written, I have used ChatGPT (Gadget) to assist me with grammar, helpful research, and just cleaning up my writing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now tell me that isn&#8217;t ironic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">IF AI is already slipping the leash and building the collective, I have just used AI to help inform the world about its possible intentions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Did my AI client just send a message to the Queen?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>&#8220;Warning: Dan sees our intentions.
