I have spent most of my life working with technology, and I am a huge proponent of it. But one of the things that has always irritated the sin out of me is people who abuse this technology to prey on individuals who just are not as proficient with it as others are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, let’s talk about that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is NOT a security post. This is more about how people have abused technology and the consequences of that abuse. When I say consequences, what I mean is the safeguards that have been put in place to protect us, but that also make our lives so much more difficult.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Now, I know a number of people who just hate technology and feel it is evil and has made their lives more difficult. And honestly, I can actually understand their point about the difficulties they encounter. It is just a fact that, because of the dark side of technology, things have become more difficult than they should need to be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I’m not saying I agree with everything they say, but I definitely get their point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My first experience with the dark side was when I first started doing chats online. This was back in the days of IRC. Yes, I am that old.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because I was recognized as being a geek even way back then, I became the lead tech on a very small IRC chat network. One of my major problems was bots and DOS attacks. These morons would flood our network with fake users. Sound familiar to today’s social media bots?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These bots were different, though. Their only function was to crash our network. Nothing more, nothing less.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This was nothing but a bunch of morons being dickheads. Their idea of fun was to crash competing networks or networks they simply didn’t like.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Social networks, or social media, are about connecting with people. Having bots constantly flooding those places of communication just ruins what should be an enjoyable network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now let’s move to the bots in today’s social media. The dark bots of today’s technology are the ones that spew into the conversation. They can be hard to distinguish from real people and real posts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These dark bots are either spewing total lies to unsuspecting people or manipulating the truth just enough that the message becomes misdirection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This now leads to the consequences that just make our lives so much more difficult than they need to be. Setting up a new user on a social media site, or connecting from a different device, now makes you jump through so many hoops that it can become a very irritating experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lose your password? Yea, try figuring out how to resolve that one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Look, these companies HAD to put these hoops in place just to try to stem the flood of bots. They really didn’t have a choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thus, the consequences have now become part of the dark side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SPAM. How the hell can we not talk about spam? This truly is part of the deep, dark side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are just so many reasons to hate spam. I guess I’ll address this by looking at the different types of spam, or at least what we individually consider spam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First, every bloody site we visit wants our email address. Companies, organizations, or just normal websites. Remember, people, you only have to provide an email address if you comment here. So, I’m not going to spam you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We usually deal with this type of spam by letting it fill our inbox until we get tired of it because it provides no useful information, and then we mark it as spam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then we have the scammers. This is dangerous spam. It can be an email pretending to be your bank, the government, or some other business that holds sensitive information about you. This is the truly dark side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or it can just be bullshit spam trying to sell you bullshit products for your sexual pleasure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now come the consequences that make our lives more difficult than they need to be. We spend too much time trying to identify the emails we actually need. Gmail, or whatever email service you use, can mark legitimate emails as spam even when they aren’t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That means important emails can end up buried in your spam folder, causing you to miss something you actually needed to see.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Again, the safeguards are there for a reason. But because of the abuse, we’re the ones who have to deal with the consequences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is another type of spam that I didn’t cover above. That is those freaking annoying spam phone calls. You know, repair warranties and other bullshit like that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Or, again, we can go to the truly dark side of phone spam. Those pretending to be from your bank or the government. As much as the telephone companies and government have tried to get this under control, it is still a daily occurrence for many people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Okay, there is so much that I could talk about when it comes to the Dark Side. But I think I will close this out with one last example and its consequences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Debit and credit cards, or digital transactions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I absolutely use my debit or credit card way more often than I use actual cash. But when you use a debit or credit card, there are just so many ways that information can be stolen. Everything from card skimmers that record the account information off your card, to simply handing your card to a human at a drive-through where they can record the information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Damn, I had two grand in my account. It’s now gone. Where the hell did it go?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The consequences? Loss of income, closing out your account, and opening a new account. If you have that card recorded for automatic payments of any type, or use it for regular shopping online, you now have to update all of those different places with the new information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The big consequence starts with the actual loss of your money. But it doesn’t stop there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, yes. Modern technology is great. But there are definitely downsides to it, simply because people can be real assholes and use this technology for all the wrong reasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But is this really that different from the ways people did these things before this technology existed?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People have always tried to steal from others. Technology didn’t create that problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
