It’s about understanding things I’ve read and always wanted to understand better. And believe me, it’s complicated.

There is no proof that parallel universes exist, but there are credible scientific theories suggesting that they might.

So, what I’m going to try to do here is summarize the existing theories I’ve found on a few reputable science reference sites. Hopefully, I’ll come away with a better understanding of what these scientists are actually saying.

And then I’ll try to explain those theories to you in plain English, the kind we can all understand without needing a degree in physics.

Be warned, this is going to be one long-ass article! There is just so much shit to go through, even when I try to summarize it.

The Six Theories We’ll Explore

Here’s a quick overview of the six ideas I’ll be exploring. As I discovered while researching them, not all six actually describe separate universes. Some explain how other universes might exist, while others describe how reality itself might work.

Scientific Overview

Bubble Universe Theory

Many-Worlds Interpretation

Infinite Universe Theory

String Theory

Extra Dimensions

Mirror Universe Theory

My understanding of those theories

Bubble Universe Theory

Many-Worlds Interpretation

Infinite Universe Theory

String Theory

Extra Dimensions

Mirror Universe Theory

In Conclusion

One thing I’ve learned already: just because scientists discuss something under the heading of parallel universes doesn’t mean they’re all talking about the same thing.

Let’s start with the three sources I’m using as references for this article:

NPR: A discussion with a physicist about why parallel universes might exist.

Space.com: An explanation of parallel universes and the scientific theories behind them.

EBSCO Research: An overview of the multiverse and the scientific ideas surrounding it.

While NPR may not be a scientific publication, I felt its discussion with a physicist about parallel universes was relevant enough to include as a reference for this article.

With the help of my AI companion, Gadget (ChatGPT), I’m going to summarize the different scientific theories surrounding parallel universes. By using AI for this purpose, I can eliminate duplicate explanations from the different sources and concentrate on understanding what each theory actually means.

Parallel Universes: Scientific Theories

1. The Bubble Universe Theory (Eternal Inflation)

Scientists believe the universe underwent an extremely rapid expansion shortly after the Big Bang. This is called cosmic inflation.

Some physicists suggest that this rapid expansion may have stopped in our part of the universe but continued elsewhere.

Different regions could develop into separate universes, sometimes called bubble universes.

These universes might have different physical properties or even different laws of physics.

If they exist, they could be so separated from us that reaching or observing them would be impossible.

Scientific status: Cosmic inflation is a serious scientific hypothesis, but eternal inflation and other bubble universes have not been established.

2. The Many-Worlds Interpretation (Quantum Mechanics)

Quantum mechanics studies how matter and energy behave at extremely small scales, such as atoms and particles.

Experiments show that particles can behave in ways that seem strange compared with objects in everyday life.

One interpretation of quantum mechanics suggests that different possible outcomes of quantum events occur in separate branches of reality.

These branches could represent different versions of events.

The interpretation does not require a person to make a decision for branching to occur. It concerns quantum events.

Scientific status: Quantum mechanics is extremely well tested. However, the Many-Worlds interpretation is only one proposed explanation of what the mathematics means. The existence of those other worlds has not been demonstrated.

3. The Infinite Universe Theory

Scientists do not know whether the entire universe is finite or infinite.

We can only observe a limited portion of it because light has had a limited amount of time to reach us.

If space extends infinitely, there could be regions unimaginably far beyond anything we can observe.

Some models suggest that arrangements of matter could eventually repeat, potentially producing regions resembling our own.

These would not necessarily be separate universes. They could be distant parts of the same enormous universe.

Scientific status: The observable universe is real, but an infinite universe and exact copies of Earth remain unproven possibilities.

4. The Mirror Universe Theory

Some physicists have proposed that a counterpart to our universe could exist on the opposite side of the Big Bang.

In certain models, time would extend in the opposite direction relative to our own cosmic history.

Such a universe could have different relationships between matter, antimatter, and the direction of time.

This is not necessarily another universe existing beside ours in space.

Scientific status: This is a speculative theoretical model, not an observed universe.

5. String Theory

String theory proposes that the smallest building blocks of nature may be tiny vibrating strings rather than point-like particles.

Different vibrations of these strings would produce different kinds of particles.

String theory allows for many possible arrangements of the underlying laws of physics.

Some of these arrangements could help explain why separate universes might have different physical properties.

Scientific status: String theory has not been experimentally confirmed.

6. Extra Dimensions

Some scientific theories, including string theory, propose that additional dimensions of space could exist beyond the three dimensions we experience.

Certain models suggest that our universe could exist within a larger, higher-dimensional structure.

Other universes could exist within that structure, separated from ours along dimensions we cannot perceive.

These universes wouldn’t necessarily be separated by enormous distances within the space we’re familiar with.

Scientific status: These proposed extra dimensions and separate universes have not been experimentally confirmed.

The Bubble Universe Theory

During cosmic inflation, scientists propose that space expanded enormously in an incredibly short period.

Eternal inflation takes this idea further by suggesting that this incredibly rapid expansion ended in some regions of space while continuing in others.

Those regions where inflation ended could develop into separate bubble universes.

That was Gadget dumbing it down for me. Here’s what I got out of it.

The idea is that space was growing incredibly fast.

In some areas, that extremely fast growth came to an end, although space itself could continue expanding at a much slower rate. Those areas could develop into separate bubble universes, each with its own region of space.

Meanwhile, in other areas, that extremely fast growth continued, possibly allowing more bubble universes to form.

Now, here’s an important distinction I hadn’t considered at first. I originally pictured new universes forming inside our existing universe. But the theory suggests something different.

Our own universe could actually be one of those bubbles, formed within a much larger region of expanding space.

So rather than other universes forming inside ours, our universe might be just one of many that formed through the same process.

And that brings up another interesting possibility I hadn’t considered. If our universe is one of those bubbles, then the larger region of space where it formed could have existed long before our own Big Bang.

We estimate our universe to be about 13.8 billion years old. But what if the larger system that produced our universe is much older? Could other bubble universes have formed billions of years before ours?

Blows your mind, right? Well, it probably took me over an hour of back-and-forth discussions with AI to actually understand this. And yes, my head really did attempt to explode!

The Many-Worlds Interpretation of Quantum Mechanics

Imagine flipping a coin.

Normally, we expect the coin to land on either heads or tails.

But imagine that both outcomes happen. In one branch of reality, the coin lands on heads. In another branch, it lands on tails.

You would only experience one of those outcomes, even though both branches would exist.

Now, the coin is just an example to make the idea easier to picture. The actual theory deals with quantum events, not ordinary coin flips.

And here’s something interesting: unlike the Bubble Universe Theory, these different realities wouldn’t necessarily be separate bubbles floating around in some larger space.

They would be different branches of the same underlying quantum reality.

There are still many things we don’t fully understand about time, space, and other dimensions.

To me, these different branches of reality would almost be like another dimension. Not necessarily another dimension in the scientific sense, but another reality existing alongside our own that we can’t see or experience.

The Infinite Universe Theory

Imagine that space goes on forever, with no end or boundary.

Now, consider that there may be only so many ways matter can be arranged within a particular area of space.

If space is infinite, and the number of possible arrangements is limited, eventually those arrangements could repeat.

That means somewhere unimaginably far away, there could be another Earth, another solar system, or even an entire region of space identical to ours.

But here’s something I found interesting while discussing this with Gadget.

That wouldn’t necessarily be another universe at all.

It could simply be a repeated arrangement of matter in another part of our existing universe.

Scientists sometimes include this idea when discussing parallel universes because those distant regions could be so far away that we could never see or reach them.

So, unlike the Bubble Universe Theory or the Many-Worlds Interpretation, this idea doesn’t require separate universes or different branches of reality.

It could just be more of the same universe, stretching on forever.

String Theory

The basic idea behind string theory is that the tiniest building blocks of everything might not be particles shaped like little dots, but incredibly tiny vibrating strings.

Different vibrations would produce different kinds of particles, somewhat like different notes coming from a guitar string.

Here’s where parallel universes enter the picture.

String theory suggests there could be many different ways the underlying laws of physics could be arranged. That means different universes might have different laws of physics.

And here’s something interesting. String theory could actually fit together with the Bubble Universe Theory we discussed earlier.

Think of it this way.

The Bubble Universe Theory offers a possible explanation for how separate universes could form.

String Theory offers a possible explanation for why those universes might have different laws of physics.

Imagine two bubble universes.

In ours, gravity and the other forces of nature work as we know them. But in another universe, those forces might behave differently because its underlying physics is arranged differently.

So, it’s not simply a matter of strings vibrating differently and creating another universe.

It’s that different universes could have different underlying physical arrangements, which would affect how everything in those universes behaves.

And here’s the distinction I’m beginning to notice as I work through these theories.

String theory isn’t really a theory about how parallel universes form. It’s a theory about how the fundamental building blocks of reality work. Some of its possibilities could help explain why separate universes might operate differently.

The Infinite Universe Theory doesn’t necessarily describe separate universes either. It describes distant regions of our own universe that might repeat.

The Many-Worlds Interpretation is different again. It describes branches of quantum reality rather than separate bubbles of space.

So far, the Bubble Universe Theory is the clearest example I’ve encountered of a theory describing how physically separate universes might actually form.

I’m beginning to realize that not everything scientists discuss under the heading of parallel universes is describing the same thing. Some ideas concern how separate universes might form, while others concern different realities or how the laws of physics might work.

Extra Dimensions

We normally experience three dimensions of space: length, width, and height. Time is generally considered a fourth dimension in physics.

But what if there are other dimensions we don’t know about or cannot experience?

Some scientific theories suggest that additional dimensions of space could exist beyond the ones we’re familiar with.

Here’s where parallel universes come into the picture.

Imagine our universe existing on something like a sheet of paper. Now imagine another sheet of paper sitting alongside it.

Each sheet could represent a separate universe, existing within a larger space that includes dimensions we cannot normally perceive.

We might not be able to see or reach that other universe because it exists along an extra dimension, rather than somewhere far away in the space we know.

And here’s what I find interesting about this idea.

This actually fits my understanding of what a parallel universe would be.

Not another distant region of our existing universe, and not simply a different arrangement of matter.

But an entirely separate universe that could exist alongside ours, within dimensions we don’t yet understand.

Unlike the Infinite Universe Theory, this idea offers a possible explanation for how another universe could exist separately from our own, without necessarily being billions of light-years away.

The Mirror Universe Theory

The basic idea behind the Mirror Universe Theory is that another universe could exist where certain properties of matter and physics are reversed compared to ours.

Imagine looking into a mirror. You see a reflection of yourself, but some things appear reversed.

Now imagine something similar happening with an entire universe.

Here’s where it gets interesting.

What if the Big Bang created two universes instead of just one?

One scientific proposal suggests that our Big Bang could have produced two universes extending in opposite directions through time.

Our universe developed in one direction, while a mirror universe developed in the other.

But someone living in that mirror universe wouldn’t necessarily experience time running backward. To them, time would move forward, just as it does for us.

So rather than two separate Big Bangs creating two separate universes, both universes could share the same beginning.

And that brings me back to something I noticed while exploring the other theories.

String theory suggests that different universes could have different underlying physical properties.

The Infinite Universe Theory suggests that distant regions of our own universe could have different arrangements of matter.

Both ideas help me think about how another universe might differ from ours, although neither one actually explains this particular mirror-universe proposal.

And there’s another distinction worth making.

If we’re simply talking about a distant region of our existing universe where things developed differently, that wouldn’t necessarily be another universe at all.

But the mirror-universe idea involving the Big Bang is different. It suggests two universes sharing one origin, with time extending in opposite directions.

So now we’ve encountered another possible explanation for separate universes, one that doesn’t require bubble universes forming in expanding space or universes existing in extra dimensions.

One Big Bang. Two universes. Each experiencing its own passage of time.

In Conclusion

The explanations you’ve read here are based on my understanding of these theories. I’m sure I’ve gotten some things wrong along the way. But I did take the time to work with Gadget while writing this article, and we went back and forth quite a few times as I tried to understand what these scientists were actually saying.

So, based on my understanding, these are the three theories that I consider to describe actual parallel universes.

Bubble Universe Theory: Separate universes forming within a much larger region of expanding space.

Extra Dimensions: Entirely separate universes existing alongside ours in dimensions we cannot perceive.

Mirror Universe Theory: Two universes originating from the same Big Bang, extending in opposite directions through time.

And these are the three ideas that don’t quite fit my understanding of a separate parallel universe. Instead, they describe other possibilities for how reality might work.

Infinite Universe: Distant regions of our existing universe, possibly containing repeated arrangements of matter.

String Theory: An explanation of how fundamental physics might work, including why separate universes could have different physical laws.

Many-Worlds Interpretation: Different branches of quantum reality rather than physically separate universes.

Now, that doesn’t mean I’m dismissing those last three ideas. They just don’t fit what I personally picture when someone talks about parallel universes.

And that’s probably the biggest thing I’ve learned from researching this subject. The term “parallel universe” can mean very different things depending on which scientific idea you’re talking about.

Okay, no tin foil hats for this article!
