But when you stop and think about all the different aspects of health care, it becomes almost mind-boggling.

Everything from researching cures for diseases, to developing new medications, to diagnosing a patient’s symptoms. And that’s just scratching the surface.

Artificial intelligence is becoming an increasingly important part of all these areas, and many others that we probably never even think about.

So, just how much of a role is AI playing in modern health care? What is it already accomplishing, and what might it be capable of in the future?

Let’s explore this together.

Research Into Cures

One of the strengths of artificial intelligence is its broad knowledge base and its ability to organize and analyze enormous amounts of information quickly. Medical research generates tremendous amounts of data, often from many different sources. AI can help researchers bring this information together, organize it, and make it easier to work with.

Another important strength of AI is its ability to recognize patterns that might not be immediately obvious, even to experienced medical researchers. By analyzing large amounts of research data, AI can sometimes identify relationships and connections that might otherwise go unnoticed.

AI also brings something else to the table: speed. Research that might take considerable time to analyze using traditional methods can sometimes be processed much more quickly with AI.

This doesn’t mean AI is replacing medical researchers. Instead, it gives them another powerful tool to work with. By helping researchers understand what the available data might be telling them, AI can suggest new possibilities, identify promising directions, and allow scientists to explore different approaches in their search for cures and treatments for diseases.

In some cases, AI may actually identify a possible answer that researchers have overlooked. But for the most part, it is still the human researcher who ultimately comes up with the answers. AI simply provides another powerful tool, one that can analyze information, recognize patterns, and suggest new directions for research. The scientists can then use that information to explore possibilities that might otherwise have taken years to discover.

Here is just a partial list of the areas where AI is assisting researchers in their search for cures and treatments.

Diseases Where AI Is Helping Researchers

Artificial intelligence is already being used in research into a wide range of diseases. Here are some examples of how AI is helping scientists search for potential cures and develop new treatments.

Cancer: AI is helping researchers identify potential drug targets, analyze tumor biology, and develop treatments tailored to particular types of cancer. National Cancer Institute: Artificial Intelligence

Alzheimer’s Disease: Researchers are using AI to investigate the mechanisms behind Alzheimer’s and identify existing medications that might be repurposed as treatments. National Institute on Aging: Alzheimer’s Research

Parkinson’s Disease: AI is being used to study changes in nerve cells, analyze disease-related proteins, and identify possible new drug treatments. Parkinson’s Foundation: Research

ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease): Researchers are using AI to investigate motor neuron damage and identify compounds that might help slow the progression of the disease. ALS Association: Research

Multiple Sclerosis: AI is helping scientists investigate the disease and identify existing medications that might be repurposed to treat MS. National Multiple Sclerosis Society: Research

Antibiotic-Resistant Infections: Researchers are using AI to identify and design new antibacterial compounds that could fight bacteria resistant to existing antibiotics. National Institutes of Health: Research News

Pulmonary Fibrosis: AI has been used to identify biological targets and design potential treatments for progressive lung scarring. One AI-developed drug, rentosertib, has already undergone human clinical testing. ClinicalTrials.gov: Rentosertib Research

Rare Genetic Diseases: AI is helping researchers analyze genetic information, identify disease-causing mutations, and investigate possible treatments for conditions that may receive relatively little research funding. National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences

The same capabilities that allow AI to assist researchers in their search for cures can also be applied to the development of new medicines. Remember, AI’s ability to help organize, analyze, and understand enormous amounts of data quickly could significantly speed up research into some of these terrible diseases.

Hopefully, this will lead to cures for diseases that have challenged medical researchers for decades. But even in the short term, AI could help researchers develop new medications that slow the progression of these diseases, giving patients a better quality of life until a cure can be found.

As far as I’m concerned, that is the holy grail of AI in health care research.

AI in Patient Diagnosis

Another area where AI can assist physicians is in diagnosing a patient’s illness. With its enormous knowledge base, AI can analyze the same information a physician receives about a patient’s symptoms and help identify possible causes of the illness. It can also suggest additional tests that might help the physician reach a diagnosis.

This is actually one area where AI has faced criticism, and for more than one reason.

One concern is that AI may recommend multiple tests that a physician would not normally request. These additional tests could unnecessarily drive up the cost of health care. And I think that’s a valid criticism.

But as with anything involving AI, the human should be making the final decision. That includes deciding which medical tests should be performed.

Any physician worth their salt should review the tests suggested by AI. If they disagree with certain recommendations, and I’m sure they sometimes will, they should require AI to justify why those particular tests should be performed. What medical evidence supports the recommendation? What condition is the test intended to identify or rule out? And is the test really necessary?

Then the physician can make an informed decision.

After all, AI may have identified something the physician wasn’t familiar with or simply hadn’t considered. And I say that with absolutely no disrespect toward physicians.

Think about it. A physician may have had a long, exhausting day, dealing with numerous patients, difficult diagnoses, and all the other demands of the profession.

Humans get tired. AI doesn’t experience fatigue the way humans do.

That doesn’t mean AI is always right. Far from it. But it does mean that AI can provide another perspective, potentially helping physicians recognize something they might otherwise have overlooked.

And ultimately, that’s what AI should be doing in health care: assisting medical professionals, not replacing their judgment. When AI Gets It Wrong.

Now, let’s move on to another area where concerns have been raised about AI and medical diagnosis.

What happens if AI incorrectly diagnoses a patient’s illness? Or recommends the wrong treatment, potentially causing additional medical problems?

Well, guess what? It’s going to happen. Just as it happens with human physicians.

Ever heard of medical malpractice insurance?

Human doctors have needed this insurance for as far back as I can remember. Why? Because humans make mistakes. Even highly trained, experienced medical professionals can make the wrong diagnosis or recommend a treatment that turns out to be incorrect.

And AI is certainly not immune to making mistakes.

But remember something I mentioned earlier. The human physician should be making the final decision.

If AI recommends a treatment that turns out to be wrong, the physician still has the responsibility to evaluate that recommendation before acting on it. AI doesn’t eliminate the physician’s professional responsibility simply because it provided the information.

Of course, determining legal responsibility for an AI-related medical error could become more complicated, particularly when hospitals or software developers are involved.

But the same principle applies when AI gets something right. If AI helps identify an illness or recommends a successful treatment, it is still the physician who evaluates that information and makes the final decision.

AI can provide the information, but human judgment must remain part of the decision-making process.

And as far as I’m concerned, that’s exactly how it should be. Now for the Scary Part: Patients Consulting AI

Now, let’s get to the scary part. LOL.

You’ve probably seen those websites offering medical advice. You know the ones. Ask a doctor about your symptoms or medical concerns.

Well, I can tell you right now that I’ve already asked AI about some of my own health issues. And I’m sure plenty of other people have done the same thing, or will in the future.

Earlier this year, I was hit by a car. I did seek professional medical attention, but as I slowly recovered, I would explain to AI what I was experiencing, how I was feeling, and what changes I was noticing.

To be honest, I wasn’t looking for a diagnosis. I was looking for suggestions about things I could do to help the healing process.

Exercise, for example. How much was enough? How much was too much? How much rest should I be getting? When was the best time to take ibuprofen? I hate taking medications unless I really need them.

Things like that.

And whenever AI thought something I described might require professional medical attention, it told me to seek help.

Now, I’m old. I’ve had two heart attacks, and I’ve learned quite a bit about how my body reacts to different situations. I generally have a pretty good idea when something is seriously wrong versus when I’m dealing with a less serious problem.

But here’s where things get interesting.

Just like those websites offering medical information and advice, who is responsible when someone follows AI’s suggestions and something goes wrong?

Those medical advice websites often advertise the opportunity to ask a real doctor about your symptoms. And yes, some actually do provide access to licensed physicians. But there’s frequently a catch. You have to pay for that consultation.

And let’s face it. How many people searching the internet for medical information are really looking to pay for another doctor’s appointment? Most are simply looking for free answers to their questions.

That’s where AI becomes interesting. You can describe your symptoms, ask questions, and have an ongoing conversation without paying for a separate medical consultation.

And frankly, I think AI is more upfront about what you’re getting.

You know damn well you’re asking artificial intelligence for its opinion, not talking to a physician.

That doesn’t mean AI is always correct, or that its suggestions should replace professional medical care. But people are going to use it this way, whether the medical profession likes it or not.

And that raises some interesting questions about responsibility, trust, and how AI should be used when it comes to our personal health.

I’ll wrap this up by saying that AI is a very powerful tool that has the potential to speed up research into cures and the development of new medicines. It’s also a valuable tool for physicians when making decisions about diagnoses and treatments.

Where AI becomes a little scary in health care is when we, as people without medical training, start using it instead of seeking professional medical help. And as I’ve already admitted, I’m guilty of turning to AI for some of my own health concerns.

But overall, I believe AI is a tremendous asset to health care, and I’m very happy that we have this technology available to assist both medical researchers and physicians.

And hopefully, as AI continues to advance, we’ll see even greater benefits for patients and the medical profession alike.

When we talk about health care, the first thing that usually comes to mind is how expensive it has become.
