Whenever Cleveland comes up in conversation with people who\u2019ve never been there, it\u2019s amazing how fast it turns negative. They jump straight to the \u201cburning river\u201d label and act like that\u2019s the whole story. What gets lost is that Cleveland wasn\u2019t the only city with a polluted river that caught fire in that era\u2014it just became the one everyone remembers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I lived in Cleveland for over 15 years, and I\u2019ll tell you straight: there\u2019s a lot more to that city than one headline from the past.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

So, let’s talk about what Cleveland has to offer now as a city. Then we can get into history that is not about the burning river.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Modern-day Cleveland has hospitals known around the world for their quality of care. And I\u2019m not just repeating a brochure line\u2014while I lived there, I had two heart attacks<\/strong>, and I can tell you firsthand those hospitals are top notch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cleveland also has the second-largest theater district in the country<\/strong>, behind only New York City. Want to see a play without paying out the nose for tickets? Go to Cleveland\u2019s theater district. You can catch the same touring shows people brag about in bigger cities\u2014just at a more reasonable price.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And the museums? Everyone\u2019s heard of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame<\/strong>, but that\u2019s not the only one worth visiting. Cleveland has several quality museums, and a lot of them are the kind of places you can go back to more than once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then there\u2019s the park system\u2014the Emerald Necklace<\/strong>\u2014which is genuinely beautiful. Bike riding, hiking, horseback riding, even spots for rock climbing. It\u2019s one of those things outsiders don\u2019t expect from \u201cindustrial Cleveland,\u201d but it\u2019s there, and it\u2019s one of the city\u2019s best features.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you like festivals, Cleveland has that covered too. All summer long you\u2019ll find different ethnic festivals\u2014Italian, Greek, Hispanic, Asian, and more. And if you\u2019re into art, there are art festivals and events that keep the city feeling alive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People will tell you Cleveland is nothing but a depressed city\u2014and sure, parts of it have struggled. But that\u2019s not the whole picture. A lot of people don\u2019t realize how many major national (and global) businesses are based in Cleveland or have a serious footprint there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
