Not all areas have these options.

What matters for you as a reader is this: these are the local “right now” options that often work alongside government support.

Meals on Wheels: A nationwide network of 5,000+ independent local providers delivering meals and safety-check visits

Soup kitchen: Places where you can get a free, ready-to-eat meal, no cooking, no groceries to carry home, and usually no questions beyond basic respect and safety. When I started, I had a number of suggestions to offer. But I am very happy to see most of my suggestions are already being addressed in one way or another.

So why are people still not eating healthy, even with all of these programs and options out there? Here are the reasons I think it keeps happening.

First, a lot of people simply don’t know what exists. The information is scattered everywhere and hard to find. If I hadn’t used AI to help with research, I wouldn’t have found half of it.

Second, time is a huge factor. In families where both parents are working, cooking often loses to exhaustion. Fast food and microwave meals become the default, and that routine turns into a snowball effect.

Third, cooking is a learned skill. When parents cook, kids absorb those basics without even realizing it. When that doesn’t happen, a lot of people reach adulthood without the confidence or habits to cook.

Fourth, the “food environment” pushes people in the wrong direction. If most of what’s nearby is corner stores and restaurants, the easiest choices often aren’t the healthiest ones. Over time, that can lead to health issues and make change harder.

Fifth, meal planning is its own skill set. Knowing how to shop, cook, and budget for more than one meal at a time isn’t automatic. There are programs that help with this, but the problem isn’t limited to low income. Plenty of financially secure people still lack these basic life skills.

Finally, food deserts and transportation are real barriers. If there’s no major store nearby where you can buy healthier food at decent prices, you’re stuck. And without a car, the bus becomes part of the cost. Bus fare plus limits on what you can carry make bulk buying hard, which makes meal planning harder, which pushes people back toward what’s closest and fastest. At that point, the corner store and fast food start “winning” by default.

Optional workaround: paid grocery delivery. For some people, services like Walmart+ (and other store deliveries) can help get around the transportation problem. But it’s not a solution everyone can afford, especially once you factor in fees, tips, and minimum orders. And it also assumes you can reliably receive the delivery. If you’re not home, or you don’t have a safe place for groceries to sit, there’s a real risk of food being stolen or spoiling.

If you don’t know what’s available in your area, call your local agencies and ask. Start with your county assistance office, local food bank, or Area Agency on Aging. Once you know what to ask about, getting answers is a lot easier.

This post isn’t about blaming the government, businesses, or people who struggle to eat well, me included.
