A hobby that I used to be deeply involved in was astronomy and astrophotography. I loved it, and I still miss it. Unfortunately, now that I live in a more populated area and in the situation I\u2019m currently in, it\u2019s no longer something I can realistically enjoy the way I once did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you\u2019re in the right place under dark skies, the stars in the image above \u2014 M45<\/strong>, also known as the Pleiades<\/strong> or the Seven Sisters<\/strong> \u2014 can actually be seen with the naked eye. What you won\u2019t see are the colors and faint dust clouds that appear in the photograph.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How many of us actually look up at the sky at night? If you live in a city or a town, do you see any stars at all? Have we become so used to seeing nothing but the moon while the rest of the sky appears empty?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

In reality, the night sky is far from empty. On a clear night in a dark location, the sky is filled with stars, planets, and even the faint band of the Milky Way stretching across the sky. Some of the planets are bright enough that they can easily be seen with the naked eye if you are in the right place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But in many populated areas today, the glow from streetlights, buildings, and parking lots washes out the night sky. What should be a sky filled with stars becomes a dull gray dome of light. Many people grow up never seeing what the night sky truly looks like.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is something I learned quickly while spending long nights photographing the sky. The darker the location, the more the universe revealed itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Have you ever simply looked up at the night sky and seen it filled with stars? Have you ever actually seen the Milky Way stretching across the sky? Hell, can you even see the Big and Little Dipper?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is something incredibly relaxing about it. Standing under a truly dark sky makes you realize just how vast the universe really is. For a moment, the noise of everyday life fades away and you’re left just looking up, wondering what else might be out there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I know that because of our daily lives, work, family, and monetary constraints, not all of us can live somewhere with skies this dark. But one night, if you decide to go for a drive, head out into the country. Find an open field and pull over. Make sure there are no lights around you. Choose a clear night when the Moon is not bright, because even a full Moon can wash out the stars and act like a form of natural light pollution. Then just look up at the sky.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What I\u2019ve described above, and one of the main reasons many of us no longer see the stars, is light pollution. Unfortunately, there are only a couple of real ways to escape it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you just want to look at the night sky with your own eyes, then you need to go someplace darker, or at least someplace with a whole lot less light pollution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Really, this is the best option no matter how you want to view the night sky. It doesn\u2019t matter if you are using just your eyes, a pair of binoculars, or a telescope. The darker the sky, the more stars, nebulae, and everything else up there you are going to see.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are also tools that can help, but they cost money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Binoculars or a telescope can let you see much more of the night sky, even in an area with light pollution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Adding a camera to a telescope can bring out even more. A camera can collect more light than your eyes can, which means it can reveal objects and detail that you would never see otherwise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are also filters that can be bought to help cut down some of the effects of light pollution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Astrophotography works by taking many images of the same target while it is being tracked, then stacking those images on top of each other to bring out more detail, color, and structure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now here is the good news. No matter how you decide to get into viewing the night sky, you will be joining a large group of amateur astronomers just like yourself. That\u2019s right. Once you start regularly looking up at the night sky, you have pretty much become an amateur astronomer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And let me warn you, this can become habit-forming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You start reading about what is up there. You start learning how to find objects in the night sky, whether that is by using software on your phone or by learning other methods. No matter which route you take, once you get into it, it tends to pull you in deeper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I can tell you right now, unless you are only standing outside and looking up with your eyes, this hobby can become addictive, and like any addiction, it can also become expensive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The good part, though, is that most of what you buy for this hobby, other than subscriptions and maybe a few apps, can last for years and years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The good news is that you are not on your own. There is plenty of help out there on the web. I would highly recommend visiting Cloudy Nights<\/a>. It is a great place to meet people from all over the world, whether they are highly skilled or just where you may be right now, curious and wanting to learn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The forum is broken up into many different sections, from areas for complete beginners to discussions for people with a lot more experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You will see images of the sky taken by regular people like myself, along with work from others who have spent years doing this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People there are generally helpful, and it is one of the better places to learn, ask questions, and just see what is possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I previously mentioned that at Cloudy Nights you can see images taken by individuals of the night sky. Another place you can go just to see what is really out there, through images taken by amateurs, is AstroBin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Actually, a lot of the images posted on Cloudy Nights are being hosted on AstroBin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, if you are just curious about what you are missing when you look up at the night sky, and you have the ability to take a ride out into the country, do it. See if what I am describing is something you might really enjoy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Start there. It does not cost you anything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you already have a pair of binoculars, try them from wherever you are. Check out the sites I listed if you find yourself getting interested.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But be warned, this hobby, like a lot of hobbies, is a rabbit hole. Once you go down it, it can be hard not to keep going.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hell, the only reason I am no longer involved in it is because I moved to a city and I do not have transportation to get out to darker skies. I also do not trust my neighborhood enough to bring out the equipment that I still have.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And yes, that is a serious concern if you really get into this hobby. The equipment is expensive. People can be cruel, and they can take away something you enjoy just because they can.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
